I was lucky enough to attend the filming of 2 episodes of Spectacle, ElvisCostello’s talk/music show this week.Monday’s guests: Sheryl Crow, Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case, Jesse Winchester.Wednesday’s guests: John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Ray LemontagneMonday night was very much about the music.  The 5 of them, the guests andElvis, sat around on high chairs discussing their approach to song writing, andsinging songs that have inspired them as well as songs of their own.  I sat way up close and will probably on tv soon.
Wednesday was a series of solo spotlights with longer one on one interviews.  We barely got in…waited on line a while, and by the time we got to the door all the tickets had been given out.  We got a bracelets for the mezzanine, which was better than nothing!
I think John Prine was my favorite. I’ve since acquired 5 of his albums.
The songs he opened the show with, That’s the Way the World Goes “Round” and “Lake Marie really hit me.
His wikipedia entry says…
Prine has taken his place as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation. In 2009, Bob Dylan told the Huffington Post that Prine was one of his favourite writers, stating “Prine’s stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. All that stuff about “Sam Stone,” the soldier junkie daddy, and “Donald and Lydia,” where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that.”
